Every candidate whose details are posted on this site has been interviewed and fully vetted. Millennium Au Pair Agency, based in South London, works with a network of trusted partners based all over Europe & does not accept candidates over the internet. Our agents are responsible for interviewing and vetting each aupair whose file is then sent to us for matching with a UK family. We place au pairs UK-wide but especially in London, the South East of England & the Home Counties. Established since April 1999, we currently offer au pairs from France, Germany, Holland, Italy, Spain, Sweden, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Poland, Hungary, Bulgaria, Romania and Macedonia. We are full members of the International Au Pair Agency Association and the British Au Pair Agency Association and adhere to their high standards.
Using our specially developed database and personal expertise, Millennium Au Pair Agency provides a caring matching service that gives each family as wide a choice of candidates as possible, while guiding them towards those that we think are most likely to do well in their family. We have many years' experience in hosting & placing au pairs & offer the personal advice & support needed to give every placement the best possible chance of success.

As soon as you are able to compile a shortlist, we will proceed to arrange phone calls with your favourite candidates. References & dear family letters are held on file by the agency & are available on request at any stage of the placement process. Every applicant also provides us with a medical and police check (with the exception of Sweden). We will help you exchange as much information with your preferred applicants as you need to be able to reach a decision & make a definite offer. Once an offer has been made & accepted we will guide you through the remainder of the simple paperwork that will enable your new Au Pair to book & pay for his or her travel to the UK.
From choosing an Au Pair to meeting her at her point of arrival, the process normally takes 1-4 weeks. Few au pairs apply more than a month or so in advance of their arrival date, so there are normally many au pairs available within the next 2 weeks. The enlargement of the European Union on 1st May 2004 & again on 1st January 2007, means that an Au Pair visa is now only required for nationals of Macedonia, Bosnia and Turkey. Au Pair visas are obtained from the British Embassy in the relevant home country before arrival in the UK and normally take around 2-3 weeks to arrange. In order to qualify for an Au pair visa, applicants must work a maximum of 5 hours a day or 25 hours a week and have their weekends free. Romanians & Bulgarians, who became EU nationals on 1st January 2007, need to apply for a Workers Accession card in order to work in the UK as an au pair. For details please contact the agency or navigate to our links page to find the Home Office webpage where the application form can be downloaded.
When is an Au Pair or Au Pair Plus the best choice for your family? Au pairs are best suited to families with school age children, where both parents are working, or to families with younger children where the mother is at home full time or working part time from home. Au pairs are not normally formally trained childcarers and therefore cannot have significant sole charge of children under 3 years if the mother works outside the home. However very limited duties, such as dropping off and collecting from full time daycare can be considered for younger children, as long as at least one parent arrives home soon afterwards. Some limited part time sole charge of children aged 2 & over may also be acceptable under certain conditions.
Driving should only be asked of an Au Pair if strictly necessary. Driving skills vary a good deal between countries and should always be assessed on arrival in the UK. Plenty of practice should be given in opposite side of the road driving and formal driving lessons provided as required during the first 1-3 months. The process should never be rushed as girls can go to pieces when pressured into driving too quickly. There is always a shortage of confident female drivers over the age of 21. This is because in Eastern Europe few girls in this age group drive regularly. Western European candidates tend to be only 19 or 20 with limited driving experience though many have their own cars and drive every day.
Typical au pair duties include taking and collecting children from school or nursery and assisting with light housework and washing and ironing. The au pair will of course supervise and be responsible for school children out of school hours, make sure they keep to a routine, complete homework etc. She can also prepare a light meal for the children and organise bathtime if required. Depending on your requirements you may need a normal Au Pair or an Au Pair Plus. For the difference between the two, and details of hours of work and pocket money, please refer to the relevant sections on our website.
We will also advise and support a family at any stage of a placement, although during the early weeks it is particularly important to coach the au pair in her new role.
Au pairs come to learn and improve their English, therefore they should not always be expected at the outset to have a very high level. However most of our candidates have at least intermediate English and many have good or even fluent language skills. Our Scandinavian au pairs in particular tend to be fluent, sometimes almost to the point of sounding like a native English speaker.
